Backup Monitoring

While individual tapes are relatively inexpensive, the supporting costs associated with maintaining a library of tapes, backup hardware, and the backup support staff will grow exponentially with the amount of information. Did you know more data has been created in the past 5 years than the previous 50?

The costs associated with backup systems highlight the fact that storing data off-line is already a substantial cost to organizations and creates a growing need to manage this process with precision given new legal and compliance regulations.

FileCensus is the first product that routinely collects information about ALL files in your storage environment. Given the daily collection of your file meta-data, it is possible to scan the network before the nightly backups occur and examine the file system to see how much space will be backed up to tape that night and whether backup windows will be maintained.

Do you know what types of files are responsible for consuming your backup resources? FileCensus can quickly identify the mix of file types that are being backed up. Shown here is the File History report, in the daily view mode with a filter selecting files that have been "modified within 24 hours".

Users can place significant amounts of data on the disk systems that may cause a backup window overrun. By doing a pre-flight check support staff can have advanced warning and take steps to ensure business critical data is protected. FileCensus can schedule a network scan for 6:00pm so the support staff 6:30pm and profile all the data "modified within 16 hours".

The right files

Not sure what you're backing up or how often? FileCensus can be configured to quickly and easily identify the right files, including ones missed by other backup programs. As well, timeframes can be established so you minimize redundancy and maximize space.
